Journalists meets on challenges confronting female Journalists in North East Region.

The Neptune Prime Network in Collaboration with Wale Soyinka Centre for Investigative  Journalism (WSCIJ) organised a   discussion meeting on challenges confronting female journalists in north east Nigeria and suggestions to tackle them.


The meeting which drew Female Journalists across different media Organisations took place in Damaturu the Yobe State Capital.


The meeting which lasted for about 2hr 30 minutes have discussed many issues regarding challenges confronting female Journalists and how to overcome such in the near future.


Speaking during the discussion, a senior reporter with Neptune Prime Network, Sa'adatu Maina said, women are often confronted with gender-based discrimination in all spheres of life and these women includes the Journalists.


She stated that based on experienced, religion limitations and culture are some of the challenges faced by women journalists in the North East while carrying out their duties.


Also in her words "If Women Journalists can allow to cover all types of beats, this can helps to over comes some of the  challenges especially in the North East region".


Hauwa Hassan a reporter with Yobe State Television In her contribution stated that some of the confronting challenges women Journalists are facing includes; Gender policies, beats policies family responsibilities, access to information as well as job security respectively.


In her words "Continue advocacy is paramount, there is needs for enlighten the public on allowing women Journalists to carry out their work , at least this can go along way in providing women Journalists to do their work successfully".


Also Murjanatu Hamisu Yelwa, a reporter with Sahel treasure newspaper, revealed that few women Journalists are producers and sexual harassment from news gathering also affect women Journalists while conducting their duties.


She also said "For intimidation i think women Journalists should voiced out their challenges for public to understand how difficulties they faced in gathering and dissemination in this country".


Some of the reporter while describing the role of Journalists stated that, Journalists are watch dog of the society and voice of the voiceless.


They maintained that, there are certain things women cannot do because of culture, intimidation, lack of access to information as a woman.


"Some times your job is not secure, if you were not attack, you are thinking of your family as well".
