The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yobe State Chapter observed the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today, aligning with the global campaign to combat the scourge of illegal drug trade and substance abuse. The theme for this year's commemoration is "THE EVIDENCE IS CLEAR: INVEST IN PREVENTION."

During a press briefing, the Commander of NDLEA in Yobe State, Abdulazeez Ogungboye, highlighted the various initiatives undertaken by the agency leading up to the event. These activities included religious sermons at the Central Mosque and All Saints Cathedral Anglican Church, as well as anti-drug abuse campaigns conducted in secondary schools and tertiary institutions across the state.

Commander Ogungboye also outlined the significant achievements in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse in Yobe State from June 26th of the previous year to date. These accomplishments include the provision of a new office facility for the NDLEA Yobe State Command by the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni, the establishment of the Yobe State Drug Control Committee, and enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies.

Furthermore, the NDLEA successfully arrested and prosecuted 34 drug suspects, seized 643.05 kilograms of illicit substances, provided counseling to 290 drug-dependent individuals, and secured convictions against offenders. Additionally, assets such as vehicles and monetary funds were forfeited as part of the agency's efforts to combat drug-related crimes.

Looking ahead, Commander Ogungboye expressed optimism that the newly acquired office space and strengthened partnerships with security agencies will bolster the agency's anti-narcotic strategies. Plans are also underway to establish outposts in all 17 Local Government Areas of the state to enhance enforcement and rehabilitation efforts.

The NDLEA commander emphasized the importance of cooperation from local government chairpersons in operationalizing these outposts and urged continued support from all stakeholders in the ongoing fight against drug abuse and trafficking in Yobe State.
