Yobe Assembly To Enact Law on Compulsory Test of Sickle Cell Before Marriage

The Yobe State House of Assembly has given an accelerated consideration to the BILL seeking to repeal and re-enact new LAW on anti stigmatization and compulsory premarital test for Sickle cell disease and hepatitis
The BILL which is private was sponsored by members representing Machina, Mamudo, Damaturu central, Damaturu two and Bade west constituencies, Hon, Kachalla Ajiya Maina, Hon Mohammed Isa Bello, Hon Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, Hon Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa, and Hon Sanda Kara Bade scaled through the second reading on the floor of the House
Leading the debate on the BILL, Member representing Machina constituency, Hon Kachalla Ajiya Maina said the BILL when passed into LAW will prevent the spread of Sickle cell disease and hepatitis, promote public awareness as well as access to treatment of the diseases
According to him, the BILL has provided provisions for compulsory premarital hemoglobin genotype test and viral hepatitis before the conduct of any marriage in the state
Supporting the BILL, the majority leader of the House, Hon Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, Hon Bulama Bukar, Hon Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa and Hon Sanda Kara Bade described the Sickle cell disease as one of the child killer disease and high cost medication especially to less privileged members of the society
Presiding over the sitting, the speaker of the House Rt Hon Chiroma Buba Mashio set - up an adhoc committee that would work on the BILL which will be headed by the chairman House committee on health Hon. Kachalla Ajiya Maina
The committee was given four weeks time to work on the BILL and report back to the House for further legislative action.
