Gov.Buni Donates N20M zakka And Waqaf In Tikau

Governor of Yobe State,Hon.Mai Mala Buni CON, COMN, on Saturday flagged off the annual Zakat and Waqaf programme in the Tikau Emirate at Sabon Garin Nangere, Nangere Local Government Area.

The Governor donated twenty million naira on behalf of the Yobe State Government and five hundred thousand naira on behalf of his foundation, the Gorbo Orphanage Foundation.

The exercise, reintroduced by the Tikau Emirate as one of the mandatory pillars of Islam, is aimed at supporting the poor, reducing inequality, bridging the gap between the rich and the poor, and ensuring equitable circulation of wealth. It also seeks to foster unity, compassion, and shared responsibility, thereby promoting a more peaceful society.

Speaking at the occasion as the Chief Launcher, Governor Buni described Zakat as a strong humanitarian and socio-economic instrument that occupies a central role in Islamic fiscal policy. 

He noted that it supports the aged, the poor, and orphans through the provision of both Western and Islamic education.

The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana (Wazirin Fune), said that as one of the Sharia-compliant states in the North, the establishment of the Department of Zakat and Waqaf under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-orientation was deliberate and carefully planned to address poverty, support those in dire need, and cater for the welfare of the most vulnerable in society.

He commended the efforts of the Tikau Emirate and the organising committee and urged Islamic scholars (Ulama) and committee members to intensify enlightenment and sensitization campaigns, encouraging eligible Muslims to pay their Zakat.

He further said whatever is spent in charity for the sake of Allah will be rewarded, as He is the Best of Providers.

Earlier, the Guest Speaker, Prof. Adam M. Abubakar, Chairman of the Pension Industry Non-Interest Advisory Committee at the National Pension Commission, stated that whoever gives charity, even as small as a date earned lawfully, will be rewarded, as Allah accepts only what is lawful and good.

He stressed that charity wipes away sins just as water extinguishes fire, noting that charity includes both Zakat and voluntary (supererogatory) acts of giving.

In his vote of thanks, the Chief Host and Emir of Tikau, Abubakar Muhammadu Ibn Grema, expressed gratitude to the state government for its presence and generous donations to the Waqaf in the emirate.

He noted that the state government actively participates in Islamic activities aimed at building peace and harmony among the Muslim Ummah and the wider community. He also appealed to Muslims to donate generously for the sake of Allah.

Over thirty million naira were realised from the Waqaf donations.
