Yobe State has achieved a landmark milestone in environmental governance as the Yobe State Sahara Restoration Drive Project secured a Letter of No Objection from the Presidency through the National Council on Climate Change — the first time such approval has been granted for a project of this nature in Nigeria.
The development marks a significant endorsement of the state’s climate resilience strategy under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, and positions Yobe as a frontrunner in subnational environmental restoration initiatives.
The Sahara Restoration Drive Project is a bold environmental intervention designed to prepare and plant five million seedlings across designated catchment areas throughout the state.
The initiative aims to combat desertification, restore degraded lands, protect communities threatened by desert encroachment, and promote sustainable development.
Speaking after a meeting with the Governor, the Project Coordinator, Muhammad Musa, described the approval as “a historic validation of Yobe State’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.”
He noted that the Letter of No Objection affirms the project’s compliance with national climate policies and regulatory standards, paving the way for structured implementation and broader institutional collaboration.
In a further demonstration of commitment, Governor Buni has signed an Executive Order to strengthen coordination mechanisms and ensure the effective rollout of the project.
The order is expected to enhance inter-agency synergy, accelerate nursery development, and establish monitoring frameworks to guarantee the successful planting and survival of the five million seedlings.
Observers say the breakthrough underscores purposeful leadership, strategic planning, and an unwavering resolve to confront environmental challenges head-on.
